Something went wrong at the Amazon end of things. It was listed as a Prime item and had a two day arrival estimate. When it didn't arrive, I looked and it was still on a shipping dock somewhere in the mid-west. Contacting Amazon got it moving but it still didn't arrive in two days.... it took a week.

This unit is no cheap flatpack from communist China. The box is 100lbs and has to ship by freight. So just be warned, something this size and weight isn't going to go 2-day shipping on UPS. All that said, I was a little disappointed that it was a flat pack. At $760, I expected a piece of furniture.

HOWEVER, $760 for a BDI piece is a great bargain. Period. I've assembled flatpacks for many years and designed/built furniture. This Valera is a beautifully crafted unit with all the parts perfectly and accurately built and finished. While not made in North America as other BDI units, this was at least made in Taiwan and it's a credit to the packaging engineers that they designed something that would protect the unit through the rough and tumble journey of freight shipping. The box was quite a mess when it was left on the doorstep but the two glass shelves and wooden contents were in mint condition.

Because this unit is so heavy, it needed some kind of wheels. What got me looking at BDI was that their products usually have hidden casters. This unit had nothing. For carpeted floors, you may want to look at other designs. I had tile floors and so I installed 6 flange mounted ball bearing units on the base. This requires a forstner bit, rasp, drill and takes about 2 hours plus cleanup. I used these available from Amazon by VXB Bearing: [...]

The next modification was cosmetic. If you don't like to see wires, the 6 large holes in the backing material will show anything behind the unit. Against a light colored wall, any cable that goes behind one of those openings will show. The same is true on the two ends. To solve this, I cut some black posterboard an inch larger than the hole on each side and velcro'ed them (across the top of each hole) to cover the holes yet allow a cable to go through as needed. I wish I had also covered the side openings. It's easy.

BDI says that the unit has cable management. Since their other units come with velcro cable ties that attach to the back, I expected some of those. This was a faulty assumption. The only cable management are the holes in the back. I confirmed this with BDI. However, they offered to send me some of their velcro ties. Unfortunately, they took more than a week to arrive and when they did arrive, they did not have the plunge fittings that attached them to the back. I ended up buying split loom tubing for all my cable management.

Because of the lack of casters and cable management design issues, I can't give this unit 5 stars. That's too bad because the quality of manufacture is outstanding and the design itself has a clean minimalist look to it that turns heads. I get comments on it all the time.
