Pentax SMCP-FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited Lens with Case and Hood Review

This is really an amazing lens with "retro" design. It comes with a nice leather bag. The lens feels great in hands, operation is smooth. I liked also the built-in retracting hood. The original cap is metal (as seen in some old lenses) and it sits on the hood itself (not on the front part of the lens, as usually). But there is absolutely no problem in using filters with this lens. Even if you put a screw-in filter of a standard thickness, the cap is long enougth to attach safely to the hood.

The large maximum aperture allows you shooting indoors with available light.

The bokeh of this lens is absolutely gorgeous. You have to see it! An excellent lens for head portraits. And it is good for 35 mm format too.

I did not give 5 stars to this product mainly because the lens I have received had (and still has) a "bug". The aperture shape is visibly far from ideal at f/22 and this imperfection can still be seen at f/16. Ok, I know that this is not really affecting the image quality, and I will hardly ever shoot at f/22 or even at f/16. But I was disappointed to see such problem in the prime product. Well, the price tag certainly sets yout expectations high.

What I do not know for sure, if this was a manufacturing defect, or something went wrong during shipping. But in either case it is not good.
I prefer to buy lenses in stores for this reason, at least it is possible to see/check before buying. But I had no choice in this case.

Another observation (much less important to me) is purple fringing in high contract situations when shooting at large apertures. It is only visible from wide open till f/3.5 in most cases. I can live easily with this.

The lens focuses rather slowly (but acurately) with both my K10D and *istDs.

My opinion (whatever other people may say) is that the lens is quite overpriced.

And the last comment... Could be good if Pentax include a sort of "certificate of authenticity " with their Limited lenses. Not just the standard S/N card. The same goes to the manual, which shows the FA 50 mm lens on the cover page. It is a small thing, but when selling prime products the company should pay attention to such small things.

UPD: Purple fringing may be more pronounced in some situations. I have noticed a significant amount of it when shooting even at f/5.6. In most cases those are reflections from flash.

Elite Screens TE120HC2 CineTension2 Series Electric Projection Screen (120" Diag. 16:9 58.9"Hx104.6"W) Review

I ordered the TE106HW2-E24 model with the extra 24" black drop, but Amazon sent me the regular TE106HW2 by mistake. Fortunately, I don't actually need the extra black drop for my installation, I just wanted it for flexibility in case I change the location or move to a new house. So I kept the TE106HW2.

Packaging:
The screen arrived doubled boxed, with very good foam padding, the packaging is very impressive and minimizes the possibility of shipping damage.

Features:
This screen comes fully loaded with all the options most people would ever need:
- The Screen in CineWhite 1.1 gain with tab tensioning
- IR Remote
- RF Remote
- Wall switch
- IR receiver/extender dongle
- 12-volt trigger with dongle
- mounting brackets, screws
- a really nice bubble level

It really amazes me that it comes with all these options as most other "high end" screen companies sell you each one of these at an extra charge even though their starting price is several thousand dollars. The Cinetension2 is an AMAZING value in my opinion.

Mounting:
The mounting was very easy. My wife and I did it ourselves. The mounting brackets are very easy to install and come with all the screws you need. Also, the screen comes with three velcro straps tied around the screen box, this is very handy, you leave these on during the installation to prevent the screen's weight bar from flapping around during installation. The screen is not very heavy, but you do need two people to lift it up to the mounting brackets. The sliding mounting bolts are very neat in that you don't have to line anything up ahead of time, just lift the screen, hook the back to the bracket, slide the bolts into position, and tighten with a wrench... all very easy, and can be done in ~20min.

Controls:
Whether you use the remote, the wall switch or the 12-volt trigger, the up and down motion is very smooth and relatively quiet and pretty fast compared to other brands (check out other brands on YouTube and you will see how slow they are!!). I'm using the remote at the moment, but intend to connect the 12-volt trigger to my projector. I found this handy wiring diagram for the RJ45 port: [...]

Vertical Drop Adjustment:
The first time you lower the screen, it will go all the way down to its lowest level by default (at least mine did). I needed to raise it by 3 inches so that it stopped just above our media cabinet. The instructions to do this are on the website here:

The instructions are not very clear. You can only fine tune the adjustment on the way down, which means you must first bring the limit up and then adjust it down. Here's my version, if you want to raise the limit of where the screen stops on the way down...

1) First, don't mess with the grey screw, this adjusts the UP limit and you shouldn't have to touch this.
2) To adjust the DOWN limit, you want to adjust the yellow screw ONLY.
3) Put the screen down.
4) DO NOT turn the yellow screw counter-clockwise at this point as this will cause the screen to fully come down and possibly drop out of the box
5) With the screen down, measure approximately how many inches you want to raise the lower limit.
6) Raise the screen up (fully retracted)
7) Turn the yellow screw clockwise one full turn per inch that you measured, and add an extra turn or two.
8) Put the screen down, it should now have stopped at a higher point than before.
9) With the screen down, turn the yellow screw counter-clockwise. For each small turn, the screen will immediately drop a little bit. Keep turning the screw slowly until you are satisfied with the position. Done.

Screen:
I have read reports that some people have received screens that have waves or are not perfectly rectangular. Luckily, I did not have any issues with mine. My screen surface has no waves, is uniform and perfectly rectangular. The tab tensioning works very well so far. The whole thing appears to be a high quality piece of equipment.

Watching movies:
Now this is where the fun starts. This is my first ever projection screen. I paired it with a Panasonic PT-AE4000 which I also bought here at Amazon. I have a 14' throw distance and ceiling mounted and 13.5' viewing distance. The first movie we watched was Avatar! It was absolutely amazing! The color, contrast, everything... just amazing.

Conclusion:
I've only had the screen for a couple days, so it remains to be seen how it will withstand frequent use. But at this point, I see no reason to pay thousands of dollars more for the "high end" brands. I would highly recommend this screen to anyone.

Denon AVR990 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with Networking Capability and 1080p HDMI Connectivity Review

I have owned Denon in the past, and have always found it to be quality Audio gear
Now that I need a Home AVR it was to no surprise after taking a 5 or 6 weeks to decide
I went with Denon AVR990 / 3310IC

I wanted to go with Pioneer SC-25 at it was the Model that I was impressed with, and my needs to have Phono Input - with an input stage (the amplification part for Phono) would sound great! - but I settled for the Denon as I got a better price - not sure what the sound difference is, as I did not have a side by side comparison, but I absolutely love the Denon AVR 990 Phono Input stage, with my JVC QL-Y55F - with GRADO G-2 Cartridge - sounds MUCH better than my CD's that I have the same Copy on both, It is a fun test for when people that come over to see how suspired the Vinyl records sound fuller and richer than CD's - also my speakers are also my speakers are Magnepans (full-range ribbon) - that helps

Anyway - the sound is Amazing, and I am very happy with my purchase, as my Previous model for the last 6 years was Harman Kardon - so I wanted to make sure the new model sounded as good or better than my last - as you may have noticed, I felt not go back to Harman Kardon - not because I did not like sound or quality! - The fact is the late models have had Known Issues, I felt better stepping away from that brand for now at least
& Denon & Pioneer certainly fit in that category in my opinion

Now on a negative note: I cannot understand why after using the Very Nice Included Audyssey Dynamic EQ room acoustic correction system I cannot set the Base management for each IE: HD Radio set to -2 or the DVD set to +4 & Phono to Flat?
So yes every time you change the setting in the base management, it goes for all

Please keep in mind I am more about the Music, & given that is the only negative I could think of after owning it now for 4 months, I feel this is a great choice for me.

I've had my Legend for a week now and can still barely put it down! The integration between apps is amazing. I like the selection of apps from the android market - and the HTC Sense UI makes the whole thing really quite intuitive. This is my first touch-screen phone (I've always had physical keyboard'd phones previously). This is easy to type on, the predictive-text is great.

The cons: With heavy usage, my battery will last me about 12 hrs max. With regular usage then 2 days is typical. The AMOLED screen is awesome, but fairly hard to see outside. I didn't think it would matter that much-- but the place it impacts me is if I'm taking pictures (need to see the screen as the viewfinder). If I place my hand over it for shade, it's generally enough, but still makes me wish I could see it better.

The speed of the device is great. I'm actively recommending it to any of my friends who are in the market right now.l
