Voigtlander Ultra Wide-Heliar 12mm f/5.6 Aspherical M Mount Lens for Leica M - Black Review

I have used 12mm with NEX via voigtlander adapter. Though I currently do not use the combo, this is due to the fact that I decided to part with NEX and had nothing to do with the lens.

Few things to know about the lens:
1) It has a color shift in the corners. Not as bad as Voigtlander 21mm, but still noticeable in some cases. For landscape work I generally did not need to correct for it - oddly enough in the cases where it was noticeable it contributed and not detracted from a picture. But be aware of it.
2) It has a pretty long minimal focus distance, more so than most DSLR wide angles I have used. This is a problem if you like to stick camera into someone's face (I do). This is a serious limitation and I would like for this to be fixed.
3) There is a noticeable light fall-off to the edge.
4) It is not the sharpest wide angle I have ever used.

After listing all of these limitations why am I giving it 4 stars? Because results are great. It is a high contrast lens. Most people do not understand what that means. They will show you a resolution chart of some Tamron lens and claim that it is better than any Leica since resolution is great... Well, resolution is great, but what you perceive with your eye as sharpness is not the resolution but micro-contrast. This is where 12mm is great. I got many remarks about how sharp the images were, but they were not all that sharp - just had very good contrast.

Overall I loved the way the lens rendered color and made everything look saturated and sharp.

Mechanically lens is great - solid metal. It will be hard to switch to a consumer quality lens after handling lenses like that. They just feel 'real.'

The cabinet is beautiful. Construction was relatively easy, but my only real complaint is the design and installation of the inside shelves. I guess they wanted to avoid the typical peg hole shelf that allows you to move the shelf at various integrals. Instead they put in a series of 3 infinitely adjustable shelves that are held in place by nuts that slide up and down the inside rails and are tightened by an Allen wrench (supplied). Awkward to tighten once the assembly is complete and very difficult to level based on having to deal with 4 "infinitely adjustable" points. On this particular facet, design got in the way of function. That's the only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars. Worth the money.

  This bundle was the best value I found on the T4i -- a very good price, and contained things I actually needed. Package arrived from Cameta camera quickly, complete and as promised. I had the older XSI previously (which I loved - gave it to my daughter). The controls on the T4i are very similar -- nice not to have to relearn buttons, menus etc. I have not shot videos yet but the new buttons for that appear very straightforward. The view screen folds outward or can be returned into place, facing outward or inward / closed -- works great and great quality. I have also been very pleased with the quality of shooting in low light conditions. Even shooting kids basketball games (the gym lighting can be poor) even at 1800-3600 ISO the graininess is not bad at all.
  
  Also the camera bag is much bigger and deeper than I realized. The inside main compartment can be completely custom organized for your stuff, and would probably hold two SLR's with multiple lenses and accessories. It is fairly heavy too because of its size. I'm sure I'll find a use for it, but I'll probably buy a smaller bag to cut down on the weight. I don't really mind because for the price you can consider the bag and probably most of the other items "free" compared with just buying the camera, the 18-55 mm lens, and the memory card by themselves.
