NIKON Monarch5 20x56 Binoculars (7583) Review

These high powered binoculars are great for hunting and any outdoor adventure. I set my Nikon 20x56 on a tri-pod at about 5 AM and glassed an entire ridgeline seeing several elk and white tail at ranges between 800-1900 yards. The low light dispersion is pretty good, although with the 20x optics, the view is slightly darker than the elusive Vortex Kaibab which retail at $1200. For a high end glass, these Nikon's do display a wide range of color and depth at low light conditions. The weight is moderate. Obviously, getting a 20x power optic, these will not be the lightest binocular on the market. The water proofing and outside rubber texture work well in the rain. (Although, it was not a down poor, a consistent annoying rain did not bother these optics at all.) Good sturdy equipment made by NIKON and backed by their 100% Warranty for 25 years. These definitely compete with any binocular at this price range.

Samyang SYCV85M-C 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon VDSLR Review

I've tried all of the other Samyang/Rokinon Cine lenses available and own the 24mm as well (which is not nearly as sharp as this one). This 85mm is the sharpest of the set, and even wide open it is not bad at all. The build quality is the weakest attribute and is probably a 7/10 and doesn't really compare with other cine lenses (that are also much much more expensive), but the colors and details that the lens captures are on par with lenses in the $4,000 range. Contrast ratio is also comparable when intercut with more expensive lenses, but I haven't done any proper tests. This is really the only Samyang/Rokinon lens in the set that is a no brainer buy for video work (based on the performance to value ratio), but I would not recommend this to a buyer who often lets others handle his/her gear. I don't think this lens will last long with any level of abuse. I would absolutely recommend it to others, but I wouldn't expect to get a lifetime of work out of it like the other cine alternatives.

I am involved with video and audio production in one of the hats that I wear. With APHEX CHANNEL, I have the same voice characteristics wherever I go, because I can take an RE320 mic and the APHEX CHANNEL to a studio, set, or other event, and just plug this into the audio chain. My voice virtually always sounds the same.

The DE-ESSER works great, and so do the other effects. I could do without the 12AT7 tube (Jayce says it should still be going strong after 5 years of continuous duty), but it's part of the "warmth fad" going around these past few years, so if you don't have something that glows and produces useless heat, it appears you can't be in the high-end pre business these days.

The compression has no pumping or high or mid frequency dropout. It is not harsh or thumpy. You will hardly notice it's there, unless you're looking at a VU meter, then you notice that your average audio or modulation is way up there. If you're in the broadcast game, this is exactly what you want.

The voicing characteristics of this mic amp are what you are really paying for. I found that this unit can establish a unique sound presence for virtually every talent I've dealt with, and many are now looking to buy one to take on the road. Setup takes only a few minutes with a good pair of cans. Setup couldn't be easier, and the ability to actually control the depth of the gate is invaluable for me and prevents that sharp on/off cliff effect.
