Pentax K-01 16MP APS-C CMOS Compact System Camera Kit with DA 40mm Lens (White) Review

I've had this camera for a few weeks now and I must say I like it. Owning the K5, I wanted a camera that would give me similar image quality in a smaller package. The K-01 delivers on both counts, though it's not as small as I'd like. However, it handles well, and the live view implementation is better than the implementation of live view on the dSLRs. I use the DA Limited lenses on this camera, and they focus and handle very well. I haven't tried larger lenses since I have the K5 for that.

In social situations, the camera puts people at ease, and being able to shoot from the hip (literally) makes it easier to engage your subjects and still get excellent photos.

I haven't shot much video with it, but having one-button access to the function is very handy.

Using manual lenses on this camera is a breeze, much easier than the dSLRs for me. With focus peaking and live view zoom, it's very easy to nail focus.

If you're looking for a serious snapshot camera, this is a great choice, even if you don't own any Pentax lenses. Teh 40mm kit lesn is outstanding, probably equal to the DA40 Limited prime (I have both and have compared them). My only concern with the 40mm kit lens is the lack of a lens hood, thought it never caused me a problem in the time I owned the lens (I sold it since I have the DA40 Ltd).

For people worried about the lack of an optical or electronic viewfinder, I've shot the K-01 several times in bright Texas sunlight, and the LCD works well enough for me to compose and focus. Honestly, the lack of a OVF or EVF is a non-issue for me.

All in all, I think this camera is a winner and well spec'd as a dSLR complement.

I am just learning to use this tablet. I am trying to find out if the glass is gorilla glass and I still do not know. (Does anyone know?) Setting up the apps took a lot of patience particularly Google and Nook. Thanks to persistence from my wife we were successful. The tablet runs fast and is easy to handlle. The leather case I got from Amazon is nice but adds weight and is cumbersome. I would recommend just getting a gel cover providing the glass is Gorilla glass from Corning.

The Samsung is very nice and perhaps equal to Apple 2. The size is near perfect and easier to handle than a larger tablet. . Now that the Samsung is running correctly, I love it. I recommend this 8.9 to anyone that wants a tablet that is larger, runs on Android, ( better than a Kindle or Nook,) and not difficult to handle. Hope you have a lovely wife to assist with setting up!

Update: After several days of use, I love this table even more. I have installed several free apps and this was quite easy. Battery life seems to be quite long. After further research, I do not believe the glass is Gorilla from Cornng.

I am glad I purchased this fisheye. There is alot of competition between this lens and the century optics death lens. The death lens is quite expensive though, so I feel that it is more of a professional lens. If you are making videos for fun (I am using this lens for filming skateboarding with friends) then this lens is for you.

It's probably the widest lens for its price, and it produces a great distortion effect, pulling the subject closer and making the background recede.

I purchased this on Amazon for less than I could get it from the manufacturer and free shipping too. It is exactly what I needed at a price much lower than anywhere. Duh, isn't that why we shop on Amazon in the first place? The only drawback is that the software to transfer data through the USB cable is only available through the manufacturer and cost an extra $95. For the price a real winner. It has a great hook that come out of the bottom of the scale for doing suspended weights. I needed this feature especially to enable measuring density by Archimedes' method.

Follow-up: January 31, 2013
I have used this scale for several months and it is plagued by having to keep pressing the tare button while weighing. The scale weight drifts as much as 300 mg in a day. The weight is not stable and therefore you can not trust what weights you measure with it. I could not find a way to contact the manufacturer for a fix on this problem. I have since purchased another scale as it is too late to return it to Amazon for a refund. The other scales that I also purchased from Amazon will hold their Zero whether the temperature in 90F or 30F without issue. Research my other reviews to find these products. The latest was a real nice balance, also with under-weighing hook, that holds the zero for several days so far.

I do not recommend purchasing this scale unless you plan on testing it vigorously for the first 90 days while it is still under Amazon's return policy. The best factor that it has going for it is that you can use the USB port on a computer instead of RS-232.

Lowrance 103-001 Elite 5-Inch Color LCD GPS/Chartplotter with Navionics, Gold Review

I just set this up on my boat in Beach Haven, NJ, about 15m n. of Atlantic City. I'm about 5 miles from the inlet to the ocean.

Connecting it to power was a snap. It powered up, with the microSD Navionics card installed. I set it up for the NJ coast.

There are a number of set up screens which allow you to configure what data you want to see on the chart screen. With 5" of screen, there's plenty of room for all the info you want to see. My marina is right on the ICW. The Navionics card doesn't exactly match the charts, and the ICW boundaries are marked in purple, which is hard to see against the blue background. Once I got into open water, the chart's white deep water areas, with depths, were clearly visible and easy to follow.

Zooming in and out for more detail is accomplished with a single key push, good for underway quick checking of areas of concern. The screen is easily visible under all lighting conditions.

The biggest negative is the manual. Lowrance uses this manual for both their chartplotter and fishfinder. Almost all the manual is dedicated to the fishfinder, so working with the chartplotter is mostly self teaching.

It comes with an NMEA output but no cable, so I wasn't able to interface it to my computer.

Overall, I'd say this is a very good, moderately priced chartplotter, typical of Lowrance's dedication to value. I got it for $480 bundled with the Navionics card, but the place I bought it from raised prices by $50 the next day, so typical price, WITH the card seems to be about $525. There are lots of places selling the base unit for this price so make sure you get the 'bundled' package.
