Meade Personal Solar Telescope Review

I just bought a Coronado PST a few weeks ago from Orion Telescopes via Amazon, and I love it! For years I've lusted after an H-alpha filter, but they were out of my discretionary budget. Not so with the PST. It's affordable, small, light and portable, well made and easy to use, so easy the only instructions are in a brochure.

The first sunny day after it arrived (had to wait 3 excruciating days), I anxiously set it up on a camera tripod. The PST has a threaded hole on the bottom that works with standard tripod mount screw. The built-in Sol Ranger sun finder made it safe and simple to locate the sun. I put my eye to the eyepiece, draped a dark towel over my head, adjusted the focus knob and saw an amazing arched solar prominence on the sun's limb, the biggest I've seen in the 3 weeks I've owned this scope. It was a great first view.

The supplied Kellner eyepiece works okay. I have better eyepieces from other telescopes, though, (have been a longtime night sky observer) and have enjoyed using the 18 mm most. I've also ordered a Cemax eyepiece, designed to work with Coronado solar scopes. I'm curious to see if there's much difference. It's backordered so I won't know for a few weeks.

Of note, there is a sweet spot looking through the eyepiece on the PST. It's where you get the best detail. Some people have a little trouble finding it at first. And if you have very poor eyesight, this scope probably isn't the best choice since it's the smallest in the Coronado line. However, though I'm "older" and wear strong reading glasses, I have no trouble seeing prominences and surface detail with the naked eye.

If solar photography is an interest, it will be more challenging with the PST than with a larger model. Nevertheless, browsing the Web you'll see it can be done and done well, especially if you enjoy technical tinkering and some digital image editing. There are amazing photos taken with the PST. I've tried some afocal (through the eyepiece) photography hand-holding my old Canon A85 4 MP camera. They turned out well enough to show some prominences. I was pleased to capture anything at all on the first try and using such crude technique.

I have other telescopes equipped with specially coated front-end solar filters for viewing sunspots in white light. In white light sunspots are black. In H-alpha they appear as super-intense focused regions of surface activity, and through an H-alpha filter everything is red. H-alpha shows prominences, gas jets and other solar phenomena not visible in white light. Each has its pluses, and the two complement one another.

In conclusion, the PST gives you value for your dollar. The views are unique, a thrill, and more than I would have imagined in a budget solar telescope. The sun is approaching maximum activity in its current cycle, and I can't wait for more days observing with this remarkable little gem.

UPDATE:
-After experimentation following some online tips, I've been able to capture surface detail with the digital camera.
-The Cemax 12 mm eyepiece arrived. It provides slightly better contrast, detail and a crisper view to my eyes. Now I'm waiting for the solar tracking tripod :-)

POSTSCRIPT 06/26/2013:
So you can see for yourself, I've posted two copies of the same photo captured with my pocket digital camera held to the eyepiece. One is unedited, the other only cropped tighter and adjusted for brightness and contrast - nothing else. I don't like to spend a lot of time editing. What I see through the telescope is more like the second image and is always clearer and sharper than what I capture with the camera. Again, this is a crude photographic method. Note that air temperature, clarity, and stability affect viewing and photography. Turning the adjustment ring one way or the other will enhance either surface detail or rim features such as proms too. Most of the time I leave it to what I think is a happy medium.

I almost bought the opti6000D it had good reviews but the opti70001D was the same price so why not. BE CAREFUL!! The amp blew a set of kickers in the drive when tested. Better set your rms.

I was very disappointed when this kit arrived. The reason being that the stand included in this kit was the manfrotto 1051 MINI bac stand which is much too small to support the softbox during outdoor use, especially when there is uneven ground and wind. The stand used in the advertisement is a different and much larger stand. I don't know what lastolite was thinking when they decided to use this stand as part of their kit. Also, in order to use this kit, i've learned that you need to purchase an extra manfrotto female brass adapter to connect the tilt-head to the light stand as you need to use both the included brass adapters just to connect the hotshoe mount to the swivel head. this is such a disappointment. I'm going to return this kit and purchase the items separately so I can get a larger stand that will be more practical for this softbox.

I bought this Pro Effects Kit with the Sweet 35 and Edge 80 optics and must say, they have made shooting with my D800 so much more invigorating. As an owner of some great Nikon lenses, including the Trinity, I was pleased that my first non-Nikon lens purchase was fantastic. These optics have surprisingly sharp sweet spots, well beyond my expectations. The fun one can have with these two lenses are endless, especially with the macro attachments (essentially extension tubes). As I was researching Nikon Tilt-Shift lenses at a local camera store, I happened upon the Lensbaby rep and was fortunate enough to demo the Sweet 35 on my D800. After half an hour of experimentation, I fell in love with the Lensbaby system. There is a learning curve, depending upon how familiar one is with composition, manual exposures, manual focusing. The key is bracketing, not only the exposure, but the focus as well. Tilt moderately at first and shoot liberally.

So for the price of less than half of a Nikon 24mm PC-E, I have an infinitely versatile tool that can be used for portraiture, landscape, architecture, macro, special effects, (eg, miniature effects). It's an incredible value. I highly recommend the Lensbaby Pro Effect Kit.

AOC L42H961 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

I got this TV a couple of days ago. I'm quite pleased with it so far. The picture is bright and colorful, and the built-in speakers are quite adequate.

Setting up the TV was simple. To assemble the stand, you just need to install four thumb screws in the base. Then just plug everything in, and you're done. The channel setup was also quite easy.

The included remote is designed to control the TV only. While this means you might need to have multiple remotes around, I much prefer this style of remote to the "universal" remote that comes with many TVs because it keeps the number of buttons to a minimum, and universal remotes are often missing a button or two for your device's specific features anyway.

This TV should have all the inputs most people will ever need. It has four HDMI inputs, two component inputs, two composite/S-video inputs, and a VGA input for easy computer connectivity.

The TV's stand swivels quite easily. It doesn't tilt at all though, so you're stuck with the default vertical orientation.

All things considered, I'm happy to have purchased this TV so far. I was taking a chance on the AOC brand (had never heard of it before), but it seems to be a good quality product overall. The only unknown so far is the unit's longevity. The TV comes with a one-year warranty, but I hope to be watching this TV for several years longer than this.

*** UPDATE ***
I have had this TV for just over two years, and it's still running strong. I notice no difference in its performance now compared to the day I bought it. I have no regrets about this purchase.
