Product Description

Housed in a compact all-metal housing, the SkyLux LED Light from Westcott is a powerful LED source capable of delivering up to 1,200 tungsten equivalent watts of output at a digital-friendly color temperature of 5,500K and a high CRI of 94. Wescott keeps the SkyLux lightweight by separating the flicker-free ballast from the head, allowing for a multitude of placement options. Dimming control from 30-100% makes excessive repositioning or use of scrims and ND filters unnecessary. The SkyLux has a 60 degree beam angle and comes with a tilting 5/8 stand mount and a reflector with an umbrella slot. Its extra-long 20' power cord ensures ample movement around the studio.

Westcott Skylux 1000W LED Light, 6o Degrees Beam Angle, 94 CRI LED Lamp Review

I have been shooting with strobes for a while but I became very interested in shooting using continuous light. I didn't want the heat associated with tungsten nor the inability to adjust the light intensity of fluorescents nor the expense of HMI. LED lights looked promising but they just didn't output enough lumens for me.

So I sat on the sidelines until I saw this light. I gave it a try and I must admit I'm very impressed. It's bright, cool to the touch, adjustable, and uses standard softboxes. Although not cheap by any means (twice the price of my Paul Buff Einstein's) they work like a charm. I love the what-you-see-is-what-you-get approach to photography this gives me. Is it as bright as a strobe? No, but it's rated at 5000+ lumens which is pretty good. They have a fan but it's really quite. As for heat, it's about the equivalent of the heat produced by a laptop. It's built quality is great and it's not heavy.

I haven't used them with softboxes yet and I'll update this review when I do.

By the way, I also went crazy and purchased a Mole-Richardson Junior LED (200 watt) that can in fact just about match a strobe (20,000+ lumens in spot) but that's another review.
