MyStudio MiniCyc Fiberglass Tabletop Photo Studio Cyclorama for Product Photography, 60x42x32 inches Review

Years ago I worked in a large commercial photo studio that had a "cyc wall" that allowed us to photograph things as large as cars seamlessly and without shadows. It was made of plaster and had to be repainted almost daily. Based on this experience I was knew that this concept of a tabletop cyc backround would be a winner if it was made correctly.

I wanted to photograph medium sized products, things no larger than a 16" laptop, so I ordered the MyStudio MS32. It arrived without any damage in a very large box. It doesn't come with any instructions or documentation, but if you look under "customer images" you will see that the manufacturer has posted several instructional video.

After setting it on a shooting table I set up my lights. I placed a 1000 watt Lowel Rifa-Lite 88 on a CowboyStudio boom and stand combo. I use various additional lights, such as a Lowel Tota-light as fill and accent lights. I also use some small, 22" 5-way reflectors for additional control. With the large Rifa set above the cyc and the Tota-Lite bouncing off on an umbrella, I was ready to start shooting.

The MyStudio 32 is not really quite as thick as I would have thought it would be, but it turned out to be very well made and stable enough. Before it arrived I was concerned about the surface of the cyc, I didn't want something that I had to be overly worried about scratching or staining and my fears were proven to be unwarranted. I shot a quick photo of a glass of rum and Coke with a stirrer made of ice to use to illustrate a review of mine (I posted it under Customer images on this page.) It was just a straight shot using the Rifa softbox without any fill. If I was doing this commercially I would have spent a lot more time on it, controlling the highlights more and making sure that the soda was bubbling, but I just wanted to show what it looked like, not sell it. This is what makes this product so great.

If you are a novice at photographing products you can still make decent photos without anything more than soft window light and a decent camera. If you are a pro then the only question that you need to ask yourself is, "what size should I get?" This thing is great, just remember that your camera's meter will not understand that the cyc is white and will try to make it 18% grey, so overexpose it by a stop and a half or so.
