I've been looking for years for a closed-back headphone that can match the sound quality and wearing comfort of open audiophile cans. Closed headphones are just more useful in the real world with the isolation they provide, but most are suffering from uneven sound characteristics and a constrained soundstage. Finally, I found the solution in Ultrasone's high-end product for audio professionals, the Signature Pro.

The Signature Pro's sound is incredibly detailed, particularly in terms of a very precise mid-range and a tight, but sonically rich and deep bass. The soundstage is as wide as that of the best open headphones, which is almost impossible to achieve in closed headphones. Apparently Ultrasone's S-Logic technology (which hasn't always received rave reviews in the past) has now matured to a point where it makes sense for audiophile and professional use. The placement of instruments and voices in the left-right spectrum is wonderfully precise as well. Everything is well-defined and clearly separated but still retains enough volume and body to sound natural.

I own quite a few nice headphones (e.g. Sennheiser HD650, HD580 Jubilee, Momentum and Amperior; Grado RS1) and IEMs (Shure SE535; Etymotic ER-4S), but the Signature Pro leaves all of them in the dust. It provides a ton of these moments of auditory happiness when you discover something new in a record that you've listened to countless times. But the great thing about the Signature Pro is that it doesn't simply expose flaws in a recording, like so many overly bright audiophile headphones and IEMs. It has such a tonally rich and well-rounded sound that you can often hear for the first time what a particular instrument in a busy mix really sounds like. Individual instruments are much easier to follow than on lesser headphones, and that opens up better musical understanding of even the most frequently heard tracks.

In terms of genres, I like the Signature Pro best with jazz, classical music and well-recorded pop. It can sound a bit harsh on blatantly compressed commercial pop (sorry, Katy Perry fans), and its bass might be a bit too disciplined for hip hop and EDM aficionados.

One of the most amazing things about this headphone is that it can be easily driven by mobile players, even an iPhone. It's about as sensitive as the Sennheiser Amperior, which is one of the "loudest" decent headphones out there. However, the Signature Pro still benefits from being powered by a good amp (I use the SPL Auditor -- another fine piece of German engineering) with improved transparency and bass that reaches deeper than on portable equipment. Another crucial feature is the very strong sound isolation. These cans keep out ambient noise (and keep in the music) very well, so they are perfect for mobile and office use.

The Signature Pro is clearly built for demanding studio environments. It feels solid with an understated sense of luxury -- like a Mercedes -- and looks like the sturdy piece of professional equipment that it is. That might not be to everybody's taste, but if you value sound and robustness over flashy styling, you will be happy with it.

Like every product the Signature Pro has a few weak points. You can certainly find headphones that are more neutral. The Signature Pro elevates lower frequencies a bit, which adds warmth to the listening experience (but it doesn't sound bass-heavy at all). It also has a frequency peak around 10kHz, which probably improves spatial imaging, but can sound pretty harsh and metallic on recordings that are heavy on hi-hats or distorted guitars. Finally, no closed headphone can quite match the sense of airy, floating sound that open headphones provide, and the Signature Pro is no exception, although it comes very, very close. In terms of wearing comfort I found the Signature Pro more comfortable than any other headphone I own, but it's relatively heavy, and people with large ears might find the ear cups a bit small.

Overall, the Signature Pro is almost certainly the best closed headphone that you can find, particularly if you are a fan of a wide soundstage. And it's probably quite simply one of the best headphones in the world, period. Yes, it's expensive. But the incredible sound, excellent build quality and generous 5-year warranty suggests that this is an investment that will provide years of audiophile fun.
