Konftel 300M Review

Working remotely from home, with a number of hour-long meetings to dial into on a daily basis, a decent hands-free means of handling phone calls is a must. Little bluetooth headsets stuck in my ear for hours just isn't gonna work for me. Binaural headsets are great (used a Plantronics H261 for years), but they all require an external amplifier to use. I've tried a number of speakerphones, connected either via a bluetooth connection, or via a cellular fixed wireless terminal, and while the sound quality has been fairly good, they all have one major weakness, being that they require a constant power supply in order to operate (either for the phone itself, as with the Polycom VS500, or else for the transmitter for wireless models such as Polycom Soundstation 2 or the Konftel 300W). Unless your phone/transmitter is plugged into a UPS backup battery, any disruption to your power will cause your phone calls to disconnect. Ditto with dropped bluetooth connections.

With the Konftel 300M, that is no longer an issue. The Konftel 300M is a dedicated cellular speakerphone. Simply plug your GSM sim card into the phone, and you'll have a high quality speakerphone, without the worry of dropped calls due to power spikes or bluetooth disconnects. The audio is loud and clear. The phone comes with a battery/charging cradle, and the fully-charged battery provides 30 hours of talk time. Moving your conference calls from room to room is as simple as picking the phone up out of the cradle. The voice range is good for a home office or small conference room. For larger conference rooms, there is an optional external mic set that doubles the audio pickup. The phone can also record to a 2GB SD card that inserts into the side of the phone.

The Konftel 300M is a dedicated cellular speakerphone (you can't connect it to your home phone line). The phone does not have bluetooth capability (ie: can't connect a bluetooth headset), and there are no jacks for plugging in headsets or handsets, so you'll want to utilize a different phone for discrete conversations (or make sure no one else is in the room). Would be nice if it had the ability to connect a headset.

One downside of the 300M is that all of the buttons are crisp, chicklet-type buttons, not the soft-press type on the Polycom phones I've used in the past. Pressing the "Mute" button on the 300M therefore produces a distinct 'click' that callers will hear each time you mute/unmute the call. Not an issue unless you toggle in/out of mute a lot. A quiet 'soft-press' mute button would've been better.

Two quirks when recording calls. When you have the recording tone indicator enabled (default), the callers will hear the tone (a quiet beep), but you will not. Also, if you are recording a call when the call ends, the phone does NOT stop recording. The phone does not give you any overt indication that it is recording other than a small flashing dot on the lcd screen. You've got to look at the lcd screen and know what that blinking dot means in order to realize the phone is recording you.

While it's not as portable as your typical cellphone (you're not gonna put this phone in your pocket), it is mobile enough to easily move around your home/office environment, and it gives a hands-free sound quality that your typical cellphone w/speakerphone simply can't achieve. For a home/office where you frequently participate in multi-hour phone calls, or where you need a mobile conferencing capability, this phone works great. This phone would also make a great backup to your existing wired conference phone system, eliminating the need to wait 20 minutes or more for building maintenance to come figure out what's wrong when your wired conference phone isn't working.
