One of the problems buying audio equipment for the iPhone is that you can't compare products before making a purchase. Although Apple stores have a decent supply of earbuds, headphones and speaker systems, you can't listen to most of them. So what's a customer to do? Read the reviews on Amazon.com? Check the professional reviews on sites like CNET and whathifi.com? I did both.

I have owned and enjoyed B&W speakers in the past. I was tempted to buy the A5 or A7, but was hesitant to do so because a number of people have complained about losing their AirPlay connection. When I checked into Bluetooth speakers, I read that audio quality could be compromised because the music is compressed. That's when I found out about Audio Pro. The Audio Pro Allroom Air One is a very good speaker. It doesn't compare to high quality headphones or a traditional stereo system, but if you want to fill a small to medium-sized room with a nice expansive sound that is reasonably portable, this is a good system to have. One of the nicest features about the AudioPro is that you can connect it to your iPhone via AirPlay or using a direct link from the iPhone to the speaker. The latter appealed to me because it meant I wouldn't have to worry about losing the connection if something happened to the signal from my router.

Three words of caution. First, I initially couldn't get the direct link to work even though I had a good connection to the AudioPro. After 15 frustrating minutes, I asked my teenage son for help. I have iOS7, and even though the phone and speaker were linked, you have to open the Control Center and click AirPlay instead of iPhone. This step wasn't included with the Audio Pro directions, but my son figured it out in right away. Second, the speaker has a fair amount of bass largely due to bass ports on the back of the unit. If you place it too close to a wall, the bass will sound boomy and overpower the treble and midrange frequencies. I found that the bass sounded much tighter and less intrusive if the speaker was two feet or more from the wall. Finally, Amazon made a mistake concerning the speaker's weight and dimensions. The Audio Pro Allroom Air One weighs 11.6 pounds, not 16.6 pounds. It is a little over 12 inches wide and a little under 8 inches in height and depth, not 15.3 x 11.9 x 11.6 inches. This is an important distinction if you have space limitations for where you'll be keeping the speaker.
