This series of large nitrogen purged, waterproof binoculars stand alone in the field of combined performance and image quality. The same care that goes into making our high-end telescopes is evident in our large aperture binoculars.The Vixen ARK Series binoculars are used for viewing the starry sky or long distance terrestrial viewing. All binoculars can be either hand held, or for the most stable viewing platform, mounted on our Porta mount or a photographic tripod (with the optional tripod adapter).The 80mm diameter lenses of these units allow the observer to take in such celestial sights as the Orion or Lagoon Nebula and other celestial wonders. Vixen 1456 16x80 Giant ARK Binocular Review

I have been an amateur astronomer for over 40 years. I've owned the gamut from dobs to SCTs to refractors. I currently own a Stellarvue 115mm apochromat. I was in the market for a large pair of astro binocs for casual observing. I ordered three models and put them to a side-by-side test. The other brands were the (horrible) Chinese Zhumell Tachyon 25x100, and a pair of Fujinon 16x70 FMT.

The Vixen 16x80s were the clear winner. They blew away the Zhumells (you get what you pay for) and even IMHO edged out the Fujinons. The Vixens had the brightest and most contrasty images, the best off-axis focus (good to about 70% out), and the least CA. I admit the Fujis were close. Also, I prefer the center focus of the Vixens (the Fujis are individual focus).

Keep in mind that binos this big NEED some sort of mount, and NOT a standard camera tripod (you can't observe anywhere near the zenith). A bino chair or parallelogram is the way to go.

My Vixen 16x80s, combined with my bino chair, have become my go-to instrument for quick observing. Two eyes are SO much better than one (I have a Denk binoviewer for my refractor as well).

Certainly you can spend $1000+ for a pair of Taks or other high end binos, but these Japanese-made Vixens are an exceptional value at $600.
