This was my third attempt at a 3D video setup. I started with a Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3. It took great still pictures but videos weren't satisfactory. Then I bought a pair of JVC camcorders which I mounted side by side. It worked, but it was a lot of trouble. When the GS-TD1 became available for less than $500 I decided to give 3D video one more try.The camera is great. It has enough internal memory to hold an hour of high quality 3D video. After a firmware update it supports three 3D recording formats: AVCHD half-width side-by-side (a 3D TV will expand the width when it overlays the left and right images), AVCHD3D (a full-frame format in which left and right frames are interleaved), and MP4(MVC) (another full-frame format in which left and right frames are interleaved, but with a higher frame rate).
When shooting 3D there is a 5X optical zoom. In 2D it's 10X. Because the lenses are only 37mm apart you lose the appearance of depth at distances greater than about 30 feet, so the zoom lens is less important than it would be for 2D work.
It has all the features you would expect in a quality camcorder--auto focus, automatic exposure control, stereo sound--and they all work well. It has a nifty setting that allows you to make time-lapse movies with frame intervals of 1, 10, or 80 seconds.
You can get good quality 3D videos with very little work or you can get outstanding quality 3D videos if you're willing to go to a lot of effort.
The software that comes with the camera, Everio Media Browser3D is fairly simple to use but very limited. It allows you to add clips to a storyboard, trim clips, rearrange clips, add text to clips, and add an audio file to the soundtrack. There are a few transitions between clips available but not the hundreds you'll find in a separate video editor. You can put together a movie with Everio Media Browser3D. If you have a DVD burner you can make a high quality AVCHD disk on a regular DVD. It will use the squashed side-by-side format and will be playable on Blu-Ray players with AVCHD support. If you have a Blu-Ray writer you can burn Blu-Ray disks in full HD.
If you're serious about video, though, you'll want an independent video editor. Media Browser is just good enough for the most basic amateur work.
If you're just interested in fooling around with 3D video and can accept the limitations of Media Browser or if you're serious about 3D video and are willing to do the work to learn and use a video editing program the GS-TD1 will do a good job for you.
