Rode K2 Tube Vocal Microphone Review

Having owned a K2 since around 2006, and having worked on hundreds of them now, I know this mic quite well. The K2 and the NT1000 are what led me to start my microphone modification business.

Out of the box, the K2 is fairly impressive, that is, if you have no experience with a professional level microphone. But eventually you'll realize the sound is compressed, thin, and sibilant, among other issues that can occur. Current Rode mics are much better stock than the Chinese made mics though. You'll still have to work and work to get these mics to sit in a mix, and the results will be lackluster, at best, for all your efforts. I know this from experience, and from the statements of my clients.

It should be noted that changing the tube offers little improvement, as the tube is about 1/5th the sound.

Rode makes their own capsule, and it is superb. The circuit design is actually very solid, based around some high quality microphones, and with proper modification will provide a sound that is warm, deep, and rich.
